Welcome to the Church of the Good Shepherd!

"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep." (John 10:14-15)

Welcome! We invite you to visit Good Shepherd to continue - or begin - your spiritual journey to a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God and each other.

Robert's Personal
Ministry Statement
One in which I might enable and empower others to serve and follow Jesus Christ, and then through their lives and action bring others to Christ

The Search Committee and Vestry of Church of the Good Shepherd are pleased to announce the calling of the Rev. Robert T.J. Childers as our parish's new Rector.

Robert was born in Selma, AL and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's in Selma. He grew up in Selma and lived there until he went to college. He graduated from Vanderbilt in 1978 and from the University of Alabama Law School in 1981.

Robert and his wife, Terry, lived in Montgomery, AL from 1981 through 1988, where he practiced law with the firm of Turner, Wilson and Christian. The Childers attended St. John's, Montgomery, where they both taught Sunday School and were Lay Rectors of the parish Cursillo Ultreya. Robert also served on the vestry.

In 1988, Robert was approved to attend seminary and the Childers moved to New York City, with their nearly two year old son, Rob, to attend General Theological Seminary. Their second child, Elizabeth, was born in New York in the summer after Robert's first year of seminary. Rob will be a senior at Sewanee next fall, and Liz will be a sophomore there.

Upon graduation from General in 1991, Robert was ordained a deacon by the Bishop Robert Miller and served as a curate/assistant rector at Christ Church, Tuscaloosa.
