Youth Programs at Good Shepherd

The ideal model for Christian living combines opportunities to breathe in the spirit through worship, classes and pilgrimage and breathe the spirit back out into the world in mission and service.  At the Church of the Good Shepherd we are committed to offering rich educational and worship experiences for youth and challenging our teens to exhale their energy and passion back out into a world in need. Under the guidance of Christian Formation Coordinator Kathleen Crevasse and Vestry member Jeff Jump, a youth committee plots the course for youth programs at Good Shepherd. If you would like to give input or participate on the committee, please contact Kathleen at the church by submitting the form below. Watch the Staff for further updates and more detailed plans.

Worship

Youth are welcome and encouraged to participate in worship as acolytes, lectors, children’s worship leaders, choir members and chalice bearers.

Education

Sunday school classes meet after the 10 am service in the youth building. The High School program meets upstairs; Middle School meets downstairs.  Four adult leaders accompany the youth throughout the year as mentors and companions on the faith journey.  Additional adult leaders teach units throughout the year.  Different units are designed to help the youth explore their own faith and practices and how to live out their beliefs in the world.

Confirmation classes take place every other year for 15-17 year olds, culminating in a pilgrimage opportunity.

Service

Mission is an important facet of Christian formation, and youth at Good Shepherd have many opportunities throughout the year to serve our church, the local Chattanooga community and the bigger world beyond.  Activities include teaching at the annual Vacation Bible School, accompanying children from Appalachia on trips (around Chattanooga, to Washington, DC, etc.), shopping for and wrapping gifts for the Sharing with Families Christmas program, helping out at the Community Kitchen, coordinating recycling efforts, participating in the Grateful Gobbler walk/run to benefit the homeless, visiting St. Barnabas nursing home and more.
