Calling and Caring

This committee focuses on pastoral care to those in times of life change. Open to all, they meet every other month on Tuesday afternoon. One main pastoral support has been a ministry of making bibs for new babies in the church community, and delivering them to the new parents with love. They also concentrate their pastoral visits on those older adults who are not able to be a regular part of church worship services. Lay Leader: Evelyn Chamberlain

Care for Creation

Grounded in our understanding of creation as the work of God, this ministry is working to make the Good Shepherd community mindful of the need to care for our environment. Participants are actively engaged with education and with projects that will help the Good Shepherd campus develop sustainable practices, modeling a responsible, "green" approach to the world around us.

Christmas Sharing With Families

Each December, parish families, Sunday School classes and other groups join forces with Episcopal Metropolitan Ministries to take needy families' wish lists and shop for their Christmas gifts. This helps make Christmas a true celebration for everyone in the community. Lay Leader: Susan Stein

Community Kitchen

The feet of countless Good Shepherd parishioners have carried them to do volunteer work at the Community Kitchen and to support the Community Kitchen with donations of all kinds. Because of our parishioners’ dedication to this organization, funding from the Outward Missions and Ministry Committee supports the Community Kitchen as well.

Grace Church, New Orleans

After Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi, Good Shepherd responded immediately with a gift of more than $60,000 to be shared by dioceses in those 2 states. Individual parishioners traveled to the area to provide medical assistance, clear debris, help residents salvage possessions and listen to people’s stories - a crucial aspect to healing after a disaster. The idea to partner with a church in the New Orleans area arose out of several meetings of parishioners to consider the many and unique assets of the Good Shepherd community and discern what the best actions might be for our community to respond to the disaster over the long haul.

Haiti

The focus of Good Shepherd’s international outreach has long included the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, located on America’s doorstep. In the 1990’s, The Diocese of Haiti was a companion Diocese to ours, and there was great interest in developing programs to support the Haitian people. In 1995, two programs connected to Good Shepherd began in Haiti—a school construction project and a children’s nutrition program. Parishioners from Good Shepherd, as well as other churches in the area, take several trips each year to Haiti to help with medical clinics.

Interfaith Hospitality Network

Good Shepherd is part of IHN's network of more than 20 churches that provide homes for 4 weeks a year in their church buildings for families who are temporarily without housing. Everyone can have a place in this ministry of hospitality as "entertaining angels, unaware". Click here to learn more about IHN.

Mountain to Mountain

M2M is an intergenerational ministry to our mountain neighbors in Appalachia. In addition to donating Thanksgiving meals, clothes, and back-to-school supplies, Good Shepherd volunteers have produced a Vacation Bible School in Appalachia, hosted children for a weekend in Chattanooga, sponsored a trip for 30 teens and their chaperones to Washington, DC, and joined them for a camp session at Grace Point. With the help of additional volunteers, future plans may include a weekend of outdoor camp fun, including the ropes course and perhaps a family camp.
Lay Leader: Carolyn Doster

Outward Mission and Ministry Committee

Mission efforts in our community include ministries for the homeless, camps for inner-city children, Habitat for Humanity, Chattanooga Food Bank, and the Grateful Gobbler's Walk on Thanksgiving Day. Lay Leader: Mike Taylor

Shepherd Shuttle

This ministry is designed to help those parishioners who, for any reason, need a ride to church, appointments, or any other local destination. Drivers are needed to help in this effort
